One-Trip vs Used Shipping Container: Which Grade Is Right for You?
Price is the first thing most buyers notice when they compare containers. A used box can cost much less than a one-trip unit of the same size. But the right choice depends on how you will use it, where it will sit and how long you need it to last. This guide explains the one trip vs used shipping container decision in plain terms.
Quick answer
Buy one-trip when appearance matters, when you plan a conversion, or when you want the longest service life. Buy used (wind & watertight or cargo worthy) when you need secure, dry storage at the lowest price and do not mind dents and patina.
What does “one-trip” mean?
A one-trip container is essentially new. It is built at the factory, loaded with cargo for a single export voyage, then unloaded and sold. It usually has clean paint, straight panels, sound door seals and an unworn floor. Minor scuffs from that one trip are normal.
Because they are close to new, one-trip containers are the go-to for customer-facing uses such as pop-up shops, offices, kiosks and homes, and for any project where the container will be cut, framed and insulated.
Used container grades explained
“Used” is not one grade. It covers containers that have spent years, often 10 to 15, in ocean service. Sellers group them into grades. Wording varies across the industry, but these are the most common:
| Grade | What it means | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo worthy (CW) | Structurally sound and fit to carry cargo. Often sold with a valid or renewable CSC plate. | Shipping goods, heavy-duty storage |
| Wind & watertight (WWT) | Keeps out wind and water with no holes, and the doors seal. It may not meet cargo standards. | Onsite storage for farms, contractors and homeowners |
| As-is | Sold without a watertight guarantee. It may need repairs. | Parts, budget projects with repair plans |
Our used listings state the grade clearly. For example, our 40 ft used high cube is sold as cargo worthy with a CSC plate. Our 40 ft used standard is sold wind and watertight.
One-trip vs used: side-by-side comparison
| One-trip (new) | Used (CW / WWT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Higher | Lower |
| Appearance | Clean, uniform paint, minimal dents | Dents, surface rust, mismatched patches |
| Expected service life | Often 25+ years with basic maintenance | Often 10–20+ more years, depending on condition and care |
| Floor | Unworn, factory-treated plywood | Worn but serviceable, may have stains |
| Best uses | Conversions, retail, offices, visible locations | Storage, farms, jobsites, secondary buildings |
| Resale value | Strong | Moderate |
A note about container floors
Most container floors are marine-grade plywood treated at the factory to meet international pest-control rules. If you are converting a container into a living or working space, plan to seal or replace the floor. This applies to one-trip and used units alike.
How to inspect a used container
If you buy used, a quick inspection protects you. Here is what we recommend checking, or asking us to confirm with photos:
- Light test: Step inside, close the doors and look for pinholes of light in the roof and walls.
- Roof: Look for deep dents where rainwater can pool. Pooled water speeds up rust.
- Door gaskets and locking bars: Doors should close and latch without heavy force, and rubber seals should be intact.
- Corner posts and castings: These carry the load. They should be straight and free of cracks.
- Floor: Walk the whole length. Soft spots or delamination mean repairs.
- Rust: Surface rust is normal and treatable. Rust that has eaten through the steel is not.
- Documentation: Check the container number, and the CSC plate if you intend to ship cargo.
Which grade should you buy?
Choose one-trip if…
- The container will be visible to customers, neighbours or an HOA.
- You plan to cut openings, insulate or convert it. Straight walls make framing easier.
- You want the longest lifespan and the best resale value.
Browse our 40 ft one-trip high cube or 20 ft one-trip standard for examples.
Choose used if…
- You need secure, dry storage and appearance does not matter.
- The container will sit at a farm, jobsite or the back of a property.
- You need several units and want to stretch your budget.

Good value is the cheapest container that fully meets your use for the whole time you need it, not simply the cheapest container.
Frequently asked questions
Is a one-trip container brand new?
It is as close to new as the container market offers. It has made one voyage with cargo, so expect minor marks, but its structure, paint and floor are in near-new condition.
How long does a used shipping container last?
With a sound roof and a little maintenance (touch-up paint, clear drainage, keeping it off bare soil), a good used container can serve as storage for many years. Condition at purchase matters more than age.
Can I ship goods overseas in a used container?
Only if it is cargo worthy and carries a valid CSC certification. Wind & watertight and as-is containers are meant for stationary storage.
